Second, for display purposes, at one point the piece was attached down to a foam core board and sealed in by a process that seems to be like lamination. It was removed from the board, and the back of the page has glue staining. Written on the back of the page is "1st PAGE", although we are not sure if that was written by Toth or someone else. Since the page was sealed in a lamination process, it still has a plastic-like layer that is attached directly to the front of the page.It is possible this could be removed by a restorer, but we have left it as-is. Also, the page has been trimmed to the borders of the art, so the picture you see shows the entire piece. The entire piece measures approximately 12 3/4" by 18 1/4". There is some use of whiteout visible in a few areas, but this is fairly common (particularly on older art), and does not detract from the visual appeal of the piece. Toth is one of the most respected artists to ever work in comics, and was loved by both fans and artists alike.
He was one of the all-time legends in comic art (as well as a great in the field of animation art), and is known as a master of just about everything, including economy of style, clarity, line, mass, pattern, perspective, light source, positive and negative silhouette values, and dramatic composition. Toth work of this quality, and from this era, rarely surfaces for sale, and once pieces go into collections they do not come out again. This is an exceptional and unbelievably rare piece of Toth artwork, that would look fantastic framed and prominently displayed, and would be a true key piece in any collection.Check out our other auctions for more great items.
